Graduate Teaching Assistant Applications
The Humanities Program invites applications from qualified graduate students to become half-time graduate instructors for the 2019-2020 Academic Year. GTA’s are assigned to various courses including Introduction to Humanities, Western Civilization I and II, Introduction to Peace and Conflict Studies and other HUM courses as needed by the Program.
All graduate instructors are responsible for teaching classes, grading student work, attending instructional sessions, and fulfilling other duties relevant to the Program, not to exceed a total of twenty (20) hours per week. Appointments are for one year but can be renewed up to limits set by the University. GTAs are required to demonstrate regular progress toward a graduate degree in one of the University’s programs, and must enroll for a minimum of six (6) hours of graduate instruction per semester. The base salary of graduate teaching assistants is set by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the GTA MOA. All appointees receive a tuition waiver.
The University’s Policy and Procedures on Out-of-Field GTA Appointments requires explicit endorsement of applicants for HUM GTAships by their home departments. It also states the “Students pursuing degrees that are not generally intended to prepare a student for a career that involves teaching cannot be appointed as an out-of-field GTA.”
Required qualifications: a 3.4 GPA (on a 4.0 scale); demonstrated evidence of breadth in the humanities and social sciences; current enrollment in a KU graduate program at the time of application; copies of transcripts from all college or university work; one (1) completed Humanities Program recommendation form. Please note that letters of recommendation are not required and cannot be accepted in lieu of the completed forms. No candidate will be offered a position without documentation that he or she is enrolled in a KU graduate program.
Preferred qualifications: demonstrated evidence of successful teaching experience; a 3.6 GPA in graduate coursework.
The application, transcripts, and reference form should be in PDF format and emailed as an attachment to firstname.lastname@example.org.
An interview of highly ranked candidates is an essential part of the hiring process; no position can be offered without an interview.
The deadline for completion of application materials is Sunday, March 24, 2019. All materials must be turned in by 11:59 p.m.
